Swine Flu And You - The Background
In summary:
How you optimise your chances of keeping healthy in the face of influenza, without risking the vaccine:
1. Eat lots of garlic (and give garlic to your dogs, too!)
For many years, scientists thought naturopaths were mistaken in believing that garlic was anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. But they were wrong. Peter Josling of the Garlic Center writes:
Among the viruses that are known to be sensitive to garlic extracts are the human cytomegalovirus, influenza B, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, parainfluenza virus type 3, vaccinia virus, vesicular stomatitis virus and human rhinovirus type 2.
It was reported that, during an influenza epidemic, the former Soviet Union imported 500 tons of garlic for the acute treatment of the disease. Garlic therefore acquired the name "Russian Penicillin". Indeed it was also reported that Radio Stations in Moscow advised their listeners to go out and buy more garlic to eat during the epidemic. In eastern Europe and in India and China, garlic is used as a substitute for western medications.
Before the development of vaccines against poliomyelitis, garlic was used successfully as a prophylactic against polio. It was also observed that garlic was very effective against viral influenza A.
A further allicin type preparation for parenteral use has also claimed activity against viral infections. A patent has even protected this application.
Significant activity against influenza viruses was also shown with intranasal and intramuscular application of an aqueous garlic extract in mice. Prophylactic application prolonged the survival time of the animals. Sodium fluoride enhanced the antiviral effect of garlic extract.
One study shows the effectiveness of garlic against rickettsia. Kumar and co-workers (1981) conducted an experiment with Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent for Q fever, in chickens. Among the results were delayed and weaker antibody reaction for the prophylactically treated chickens (daily fed 2g chopped cloves per animal) and faster recovery than the animals of the control group. From these results, the authors inferred that garlic is also effective against the whole group of viruses of this type.
Garlic is also effective against a wide range of yeast strains, and bacterium. If you are worried about swine flu, you might even consider eating a crushed raw clove of garlic each day.
2. Olive leaf extract
Olive leaf extract is a natural wide-spectrum antibiotic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal compound. Unlike synthetic antibiotics, it destroys only the bad bacteria and protects the good. Medical research suggests that when olive leaf extract is taken orally, it searches out and "inactivates" bacteria. It does this by dissolving the outer lining of infectious germs and then it penetrates the infected cells, thus inhibiting the replication of bacteria.
In the late 1960s, scientists at Upjohn, an American pharmaceutical company, demonstrated that elenolic acid, found in olive leaf extract, inhibited the growth of viruses. In fact, it stopped every virus that it was tested against.
3. Transfer Factor and Colloidal Silver
Transfer Factor is ‘Mothers Milk’ in extremely concentrated form. As such, it offers tremendous immune system support. It’s also known to provide protection against hundreds of different virus strains. Useful both as a preventative, and a treatment option should you succumb to the flu. As it reduces inflammation, it will also help with flu symptoms. See www.canine-health-concern.org.uk for details (under immune system support).
Colloidal silver is also anti-viral and anti-bacterial. Again, see the CHC web site for details.
4. Grapefruitseed extract
Grapefruitseed extract (note – not grapefruit extract) is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It is also anti-hermetic, which means it helps to keep intestinal worms at bay. A good all-round system cleanser and defence against contagious disease.
5. Eat for health
Vitamins A, C and D are anti-infective, as is the mineral zinc.
Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil, liver, butter, cheese and eggs.
Vitamin C not only provides resistance to infection, but it is also involved in the production of anti-stress hormones. Since the immune system closely mirrors the emotions, C helps you to maintain an equilibrium which, in turn, helps you to fight off infections. Natural food sources of vitamin C include cherries, rosehip syrup, blackcurrants, guavas, parsley, kale, horseradish, broccoli, green peppers, cabbage, citrus fruits – indeed all other fruits and vegetables.
Vitamin D is known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’ since its levels can be increased in sunlight. Vitamin D increases your ability to fight infections. It produces over 200 anti microbial peptides, the most important of which is cathelicidin, a naturally occurring broad-spectrum antibiotic. Found naturally in cod liver oil, kippers, mackerel, salmon, sardines, tuna, eggs and milk, supplements of D3 are also available.
Insufficient zinc levels in the body can lead to an increased susceptibility to infections. Zinc is found in a wide range of foods, including liver, brewer’s yeast, meats, hard cheese, canned fish, wholemeal bread, eggs, beans, rice, greenleaf vegetables and potatoes. Zinc is depleted by stress, and is reduced in the diet by food refining.
If you’re worried about swine flu, it might be worth taking supplements for a while.
6. Neem
Neem comes from the Neem tree, otherwise known in Ayurvedic medicine as the Holy Tree. Neem is known to be anti-viral and antibiotic, and a strong immune system enhancer. Check the internet for Neem products, or go to www.neemgenie.co.uk for further information.
7. Homoeopathic preventatives
Homoeopathic pharmacies will (if they’re allowed) supply you with nosodes to help protect you from known current flu strains. They will also supply remedies to help alleviate flu symptoms. In the UK, telephone Ainsworths on 01883 340332, or Helios on 01892 537254. However, it seems that the authorities don’t want us to have this choice. See http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/swine-flu/5956106/Homeopath-to-the-Queen-risking-patient-health-by-selling-swine-flu-remedy.html.
One London-based homoeopath, Helen Kimball-Brooke has written a letter in response to the Telegraph article linked above:
Dear Sir,
I am appalled at the article "Homeopath to the Queen 'risking patient health' by selling swine flu remedy" which appeared in The Independent yesterday.
You quote Dr Hamish Meldrum, the BMA chairman, as claiming that "Homeopathic medicine has not been shown to have any benefits at all and should not be used as an alternative to conventional treatment." I am both shocked and surprised that as Chairman of the BMA, Dr. Meldrum seems to have no knowledge of the official journals kept at both conventional and the many homeopathic hospitals in the USA during the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918.
These official records reveal that while the mortality rate of people treated with traditional medicine and drugs was 30 percent, those treated by homeopathic physicians had a mortality rate of only 1.05 percent.
Of the fifteen hundred cases reported at the Homeopathic Medical Society of the District of Columbia there were only fifteen deaths. Recoveries in the National Homeopathic Hospital were 100%. In Ohio, of 1,000 cases of influenza, Dr. T. A. McCann, MD, Dayton, Ohio reported NO DEATHS. According to Dr. Frank Wieland, MD, in Chicago, "(With) 8,000 workers we had only one death. Gelsemium was practically the only remedy used. We used no aspirin and no vaccines."
Ohio reported that 24,000 cases of flu treated allopathically had a mortality rate of 28.2% while 26,000 cases of flu treated homeopathically had a mortality rate of 1.05% . In Connecticut, 6,602 cases were reported, with 55 deaths, less than 1%. Dr. Roberts, a physician on a troop ship during WWI, had 81 cases of flu on the way over to Europe. He reported, "All recovered and were landed. Every man received homeopathic treatment.”
A report to the American Institute of Homeopathy in 1921 documented the dramatic success of homeopathy in the worst flu pandemic in history. The death rate of 24,000 flu cases under conventional medical care in that study was 28.2 percent, while the death rate of 26,000 cases treated with homeopathy was a nearly miraculous 1.05 percent. Similarly, many homeopathic physicians each reported treating thousands of patients with very few deaths.
According to these records, based on very large samples, homeopathy has a spectacular success rate in flu epidemics. Why therefore are the BMA and the MHRA attacking a purveyor of such reportedly powerful medicine? Why are we not handing out Gelsemium and other homeopathic remedies instead of Tamiflu, whose side effects are now all in the news?

8. Energy Therapy
The BodyTalk healing system offers a treatment which enables your body to recognise a virus and mount an efficient response. Take a small piece of tissue and rub it on your gums, drawing saliva and, if possible, a small amount of blood. Place the tissue in your belly button and tap the top of your head and just below your collarbone, saying ‘this virus’. Do this repeatedly until flu symptoms abate.
- There is no data to show that the swine flu vaccine is going to be effective.
- There is no data to show that the swine flu vaccine is going to be safe.
- The swine flu vaccine, when it arrives, will be experimental.
- Many studies show that flu vaccines, in general, are ineffective.
- Those targeted to be the first to receive the new experimental swine flu vaccine are elsewhere listed as contraindicated for the vaccine.
- There are known side-effects to every vaccine, ranging from allergies, to autoimmune disease, to death.
- MLV vaccines can cause the disease they are designed to prevent, thus potentially adding to any ‘pandemic’.
- At this point in time, there appears to be no evidence to support any predictions for a pandemic.
- Doctors on the street are telling us that swine flu appears to be no different in terms of symptoms to normal seasonal flu.
- Baxter accidentally released a vaccine this year that was itself capable of causing a pandemic.
- Baxter, amongst others, is now being paid to produce a swine flu vaccine.
- Baxter sought a patent license for a swine flu vaccine process nearly a year ahead of any so-called pandemic.
- A journalist has filed a lawsuit against the World Health Organisation, Baxter, and others, claiming to have decisive proof that drug companies and government agencies are actively engaged in distributing deadly biological agents in order to trigger a pandemic.
- Vaccines are now the biggest growth sector for the pharmaceutical industry.
- Billion-pound/dollar contracts are being awarded to vaccine companies on the back of a predicted pandemic.
- Other predicted pandemics never materialised, but human beings did suffer serious adverse reactions from the vaccine.
- One industry insider suggests that swine flu may have come from a lab.
- Governments around the world, and the World Health Organisation, have legislation in place to force experimental vaccines on people against their will.
- There are serious known side-effects to Tamiflu.
- There are other things you can do, aside from vaccinating, to protect yourself from viral disease.
